Rehearsals
The rehearsal room is a pretty magical place. From fizzy early read throughs to high octane final runs you are sure to experience the full gamut of human emotion in this space. It's also a place of real vulnerability. A place where you are safe to make as many mistakes as you need to. Notes are scribbled, props appear and disappear and the dynamics can often be as interesting as the final piece itself. It's a fascinating place to be and a joy to photograph.
From time to time its good to take a subtle sidestep from shooting headshots and portraits, don ones cloak of invisibility and slip into the rehearsal room. Here it feels like the main skill is being unseen. Slow silent steps around the parameter of the rehearsal space allowing you to get the candid pictures you want of the actor at work. Little exchanges between performers working on a moment, a director offering a gentle nudge or an animated composer furiously penning some new underscore. To get these moments you need to be stealthy, empathic and light of foot.
